The stage came alive at Dawn Michaels School as our Year 5 and Year 6 students took audiences on a journey into an important chapter of Nigerian history through a captivating theatrical performance of Nwanyeruwa: The Greatest Aba Women’s Riot.
Through drama, storytelling and character portrayal, our students brought to life the story of Nwanyeruwa, an Igbo woman whose experience in colonial Nigeria became closely connected to the events that sparked the 1929 Women’s War, also known as the Aba Women’s Riot.
The historical events began in Oloko when Nwanyeruwa became involved in a dispute with a census agent over the counting of people and property, amid growing fears that women would be subjected to taxation. Her experience became a catalyst for a much larger mobilisation, as women from surrounding communities came together to protest colonial policies and the authority of the warrant chiefs.
Our Year 5 and Year 6 students transformed these historical events into a memorable stage production, taking on their characters with confidence and bringing the story’s important themes of courage, unity, leadership and standing up for what one believes is right to life.
From their dialogue and expressions to their movement and stage presence, the pupils demonstrated impressive preparation and teamwork. Each performance moment gave the audience another glimpse into the determination and collective action that characterised the historical women’s movement.Beyond the performance itself, the production offered our students an opportunity to engage with Nigerian history in a creative and meaningful way. Rather than simply reading about an event from a textbook, they stepped into the story, explored its characters and presented it to an audience.
The performance was a wonderful demonstration of the power of the arts to make history memorable while encouraging young learners to appreciate the stories that have shaped Nigeria.
For our Year 5 and Year 6 students, Nwanyeruwa was more than a theatrical presentation. It was an opportunity to learn, collaborate, perform and bring an important story from Nigeria’s past to life for a new generation.
We are incredibly proud of the confidence, creativity and teamwork displayed by our young performers.
